5 Common Misconceptions About Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common problem that many of us experience at some point in our lives. Studies estimate that up to 67% of people may suffer from shoulder pain in their lifetime, often due to rotator cuff injuries. Despite its frequency, there are still many misconceptions surrounding this unpleasant ache. These myths can lead to confusion about its diagnosis, ignorance of the issue until it’s too late, and improper management of its symptoms. In this article, we’ll debunk these myths to give you a clearer understanding and help you seek relief from the pain.

1. Shoulder Pain Only Occurs Due to Injury or Trauma

One common misconception about shoulder pain is that it only occurs as a result of sports injury or trauma. While injuries can certainly contribute to this discomfort, various other factors can also lead to this discomfort. These include lifting heavy objects, repetitive movements, poor posture, underlying medical conditions such as arthritis, and age-related degeneration. Understanding the various causes is important, as the root cause determines the appropriate treatment approach for your shoulders.

2. Shoulder Pain Will Go Away on Its Own

Another misbelief is that shoulder pain will resolve on its own without any intervention. While some mild cases may improve with rest and home remedies, chronic or severe pain often requires professional medical attention. If your shoulder feels unstable and is popping or grinding, don’t disregard it. Ignoring lasting pain can lead to further complications and may hinder the recovery process.

3. Shoulder Injuries Like SLAP Tears Always Require Surgical Intervention

SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior) tears are a common shoulder injury, especially among athletes. However, not all SLAP tears require surgical intervention. The severity of the tear, along with the individual’s age, activity level, and overall health, are factors that influence the treatment approach. Often, non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes can manage this discomfort. Surgery is usually considered a last resort when other treatments fail to relieve pain and restore shoulder function.

4. Shoulder Injuries Never Heal

Another misconception is that shoulder injuries never fully heal. Contrary to that, these injuries can heal with the right treatment and care. Although not every shoulder injury has a quick fix, prompt medical attention, following the recommended treatment plan, and adopting preventive measures can significantly improve the healing process and reduce pain. Consult a healthcare professional as soon as you can so they are able to make an accurate diagnosis and develop a tailored treatment plan that addresses the specific nature of your shoulder injury.

5. Shoulder Pain Is a Symptom of Ageing and Cannot Be Prevented

While it’s true that shoulder pain can become more common as we age and increase the risk of certain shoulder conditions, like osteoarthritis, it is not an inevitable aspect of ageing. Preventative measures such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, doing regular strengthening and stretching exercises, proper nutrition, and good posture, can help you prevent shoulder pain injuries. Additionally, avoiding activities that put excessive strain on your shoulders can further reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
